- Make your home as safe as possible by changing locks, hiding sharp objects and keeping a phone within easy reach.
- You have devised a route and practiced getting out as quickly as possible with your children.
- Write down dates and times when the abuser speaks to you or hurts you or your children. Keep a record of answering machine messages from the abuser.
- Pack and hide an emergency get away bag which should include: money, personal care products, including medicine, extra car and house keys, telephone numbers, important documents including birth certificates, medical records, bank information, and court papers but most importantly your notebook documenting contact by your abuser.
- Tell people about your abuser: your children, friends, relatives, people at work
- Call the police if the abuser threatens you, contacts you, follows you etc.
- Inform your children’s school/daycare who is allowed to collect your children. Teach your children how to call the police
- Know that you being abused is NOT your fault
